Yildiz Palace – Ottoman Imperial Complex of Besiktas
Yildiz Palace is one of the most important imperial palace complexes from the late Ottoman period. Located in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, the palace served as the main residence and administrative center of Sultan Abdulhamid II.
Unlike earlier Ottoman palaces built along the Bosphorus, Yildiz Palace was constructed within a large wooded area, offering greater security and privacy for the sultan and the imperial court.
Today the complex includes historic pavilions, gardens, and the beautiful Yildiz Park, making it one of the most interesting historical areas in Istanbul.

History of Yildiz Palace
The origins of Yildiz Palace date back to the 19th century.
In 1842, Sultan Abdülmecid I demolished earlier pavilions in the area and built a new imperial kiosk.
Later, during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz (1861–1876), several important structures were added to the palace complex. These included:
Great Reception Pavilion (Büyük Mabeyn)
Çit Pavilion
Malta Pavilion
These buildings expanded the palace into a large imperial residence used especially during the summer months.

Abdulhamid II and the Palace
During the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II (1876–1909), Yildiz Palace became the main administrative center of the Ottoman Empire.
The sultan moved the government offices here because the location was considered safer than Dolmabahce Palace, which stood directly on the Bosphorus waterfront.
Many state affairs were conducted within the State Apartments located inside the palace complex.
In 1901, Sultan Abdulhamid II also built the Small Reception Pavilion, which he used as a personal space for work and rest.

Yildiz Palace Theater
One of the most remarkable structures in the palace complex is the Yildiz Palace Theater.
Built during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II, it is considered especially important because it is the only surviving palace theater from the Ottoman period.
The theater reflects the cultural interests of the late Ottoman court and provides insight into the artistic life of the palace.
Yildiz Park and the Palace Gardens
The outer garden of the palace complex forms the beautiful Yildiz Park, one of the largest historic parks in Istanbul.
Within the park visitors can see several historic structures, including:
Şale Pavilion
Malta Pavilion
Çadır Pavilion
Imperial Porcelain Factory
The park offers scenic walking paths, gardens, and viewpoints overlooking the Bosphorus.
