Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul – Ottoman Palace on the Bosphorus

Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul is one of the most spectacular historic landmarks along the Bosphorus Strait. Located between Besiktas and Ortakoy, this magnificent Ottoman palace has been transformed into one of the most luxurious hotels in Istanbul.

The palace combines imperial Ottoman architecture with modern luxury, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the grandeur of the Ottoman era in a contemporary setting.

History of Ciragan Palace

Before the construction of the current palace, the site was occupied by wooden mansions with marble-columned façades built during the reign of Sultan Mahmut II.

Later, Sultan Abdulmecid demolished these earlier structures in 1857 to build a new imperial palace. However, the project was temporarily suspended due to financial difficulties.

Construction resumed during the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz, who commissioned the famous Ottoman architects Sarkis Balyan and Agop Balyan to complete the palace between 1863 and 1871.

The palace soon became one of the most magnificent imperial residences along the Bosphorus.

The Palace Fire of 1910

In January 1910, a devastating fire destroyed much of the palace.

Only the outer stone walls survived the disaster, leaving the structure in ruins for many decades.

Other buildings located on the Besiktas and Ortakoy sides were later used as schools during the early years of the Turkish Republic, and they continue to serve educational purposes today.

Restoration and Transformation

After remaining abandoned for many years, the palace underwent a major transformation.

In 1986, an agreement was reached with a foreign investor to restore the historic structure.

During this project:

  • the palace ruins were restored

  • a new luxury hotel building was constructed in the palace gardens

  • the restored palace halls were converted into ceremony halls, ballrooms, and restaurants

The result was the opening of the Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, one of the most prestigious hotels in Türkiye.
