Welcome to the Sultan Beyazıt II Mosque Complex, a timeless testament to Ottoman architectural excellence and a center of enlightenment in the realm of medicine. Commissioned by Sultan Beyazıt II and meticulously constructed between 1484 and 1488, this majestic complex stands proudly on the banks of the Tunca River, offering a captivating blend of design elements from Edirne’s iconic mosques.
Architectural Marvel
The mosque’s design beautifully bridges the features of two other prominent Edirne mosques. With a prayer hall crowned by a grand dome reminiscent of the Selimiye Mosque, it also boasts a spacious courtyard and a refreshing fountain, reminiscent of the Üç Şerefeli Mosque. The harmonious fusion of these elements showcases the ingenuity of the Ottoman architect Mimar Hayruddin.
A Journey Through Time
A 10-minute taxi ride (₺25) or a leisurely stroll down Horozlu Bayır Sokak, across the Yalnıgöz and Sultan Beyazıt II Bridges, transports you to the complex. Marvel at the Yalnıgöz, a lonely arch from 1570 designed by the renowned Mimar Sinan, and the Beyazıt II Bridge, an architectural gem dating back to 1488. For an alternative adventure, hop on a dolmuş (minibus; ₺2.50) to Yenimaret (‘Y.Maret’) from the tourist office.
A Legacy of Healing
The heart of the complex is the Dar al-Shifa, a hospital and medical center operational for four centuries until the Russian-Turkish War (1877–78). Notably, it pioneered innovative treatments for mental disorders, utilizing music, water sounds, and scents. In 1993, the historic darüşşifa became part of Trakya University and transformed into the Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum in 1997, chronicling the rich history of medicine.
The Scholarly Pursuit
At the core of the complex lies the medical school (Medrese-i Etibba), ranking among the top 60 Ottoman schools. Evliya Çelebi, an Ottoman travel writer, illuminates the intellectual ambiance within. Mature physicians, well-versed in the works of ancient Greek philosophers and scientists, diligently studied and discussed medical literature. The school’s hand-written books library, now housed in the Selimiye Mosque, preserves this rich legacy.
Evliya Çelebi provides insights into the daily wages of the medical school’s staff and students, showcasing the importance placed on their academic pursuits and well-being.
Embark on a journey through history at the Sultan Beyazıt II Mosque Complex, where architectural splendor and medical enlightenment converge, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural tapestry of Edirne.
