Welcome to Sarayici Edirne, a place steeped in history and cultural richness. Nestled in this charming town is the legacy of Sultan Murat II, who in the 15th century, erected the magnificent Eski Sarayı, or Old Palace. Though much of this grand structure was lost to the winds of time, its kitchens, where the flavors of Ottoman palace cuisine were perfected, have been lovingly reconstructed.

As you wander through the area that was once the sultans’ private hunting reserve, you’ll encounter a modern stadium that now hosts the world-renowned Kırkpınar oil-wrestling festival. This vibrant event pays homage to the tradition of this ancient sport and adds a lively touch to the historical surroundings.

Adjacent to the stadium, proudly flanked by bronze sculptures of wrestling başpehlivan (champions), stands the Adalet Kasrı, or Justice Hall, a stone tower with a conical roof dating back to the time of Süleyman the Magnificent (r 1520–66). Two square columns stand in front of it, each with its own unique purpose: the Seng-i Hürmet, or Stone of Respect, to the right, where people would place petitions to the sultan, and the Seng-i İbret, or Stone of Warning, on the left, once displayed the heads of high-court officers who had incurred the sultan’s displeasure.

Behind the Adalet Kasrı lies the Fatih Köprüsü, or Conqueror Bridge (1452), a testament to the historical significance of this location. On the right side, a solemn Balkan Wars memorial stands as a reminder of the region’s turbulent past, while straight ahead and to the left, the scattered ruins of the Eski Sarayı tell tales of a bygone era.

To reach this captivating destination, you can follow the enchanting paths along Hükümet Caddesi, crossing the Tunca River on Saraçhane Köprüsü (Saddler’s Bridge; 1451). Alternatively, embark on a scenic 1km walk along the road to the north of the river from the Sultan Beyazıt II Mosque complex. For another picturesque route, head north on Mimar Sinan Caddesi and Saray Yolu, crossing the river on Kanumi/Saray Köprüsü (Kanumi/Palace Bridge), a masterpiece designed by Mimar Sinan in 1560.

Discover the allure of Sarayici Edirne, where history comes alive, and the echoes of the past resonate in every corner, inviting you to explore the cultural richness that defines this extraordinary destination.
