From Saint Paul to Secluded Bays

Mersin, located along Türkiye’s sun-drenched Mediterranean coast, is a fascinating blend of ancient civilizations, religious heritage, and relaxed coastal living. In antiquity, this region was part of Cilicia, named after a Phoenician or Assyrian prince. It played a vital role as a trade route between Syria and Mesopotamia through the Cilician Gates, a strategic mountain pass into Central Anatolia.

Ancient geographer Strabo divided Cilicia into Cilicia Trachea (Rugged Cilicia) and Cilicia Pedias (Flat Cilicia), with Tarsus as the capital of both. Mersin served as the seaport for Tarsus, contributing to the region’s maritime and commercial importance. Over centuries, the area changed hands—from the Byzantines to the Seljuks, Crusaders, and ultimately the Ottomans, who ruled until the foundation of modern Türkiye in 1923.

Today, Mersin is less frequented by international tourists than Antalya or the Aegean coast, but it offers unique cultural and natural treasures. Turkish vacationers and yacht tourists appreciate its quiet coves, thermal springs, and refreshing highland retreats in summer to escape coastal humidity.

Highlights include the ancient city of Tarsus, birthplace of St. Paul, where his house and well remain Christian pilgrimage sites. The coastal ruins of Soloi–Pompeiopolis and Elaiussa Sebaste, as well as the mountain-top Alahan Monastery, speak to the region’s layered past. Castles like Mamure, Kızkalesi (Maiden’s Castle), and Namrun stand guard over the coastline. Nature lovers flock to Yerköprü Waterfall or hike near the cool plateaus above Silifke, home to the church of Aya Tekla, one of Christianity’s earliest female saints.

From secluded beaches and island-dotted bays to sacred landmarks and Roman towns, Mersin offers a quiet yet rich journey through history, nature, and spiritual heritage.

How to Get There

Mersin is accessible via Adana Şakirpaşa Airport (ADA), located about 67 km away. From Adana, buses and trains connect directly to Mersin. The city is also easily reached by road via the D400 highway, and it’s a key stop on Türkiye’s southern railway network.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is from April to June and September to November. Summers are very hot and humid, especially on the coast, but the nearby highlands offer cool escapes.
