Hatay, located in the southeastern part of Türkiye’s Mediterranean region, is a crossroads of cultures, faiths, and civilizations dating back thousands of years. Known historically as Antioch, Hatay has been a cradle of humanity where Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans have all left their mark. Its layered history is reflected in its ancient ruins, diverse cuisine, multicultural communities, and spiritual landmarks.
The province’s capital, Antakya, sits on the banks of the Asi River and is famed for being one of the first places where Christianity spread. The Church of St. Peter, carved into a mountainside, is considered one of the world’s oldest Christian churches. Hatay’s rich religious heritage also includes mosques, synagogues, and other historic churches — often found just streets apart, symbolizing a deep-rooted coexistence.
The Hatay Archaeology Museum is a must-visit, boasting one of the world’s largest collections of Roman mosaics. Wander through the narrow lanes of the Antakya old bazaar, or explore Harbiye’s waterfalls and thermal springs. The coastal town of Samandağ opens up to the Mediterranean with pristine beaches and the world’s second-longest natural sand spit, Çevlik.
Food lovers will find Hatay a paradise. As the first Turkish city listed in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for gastronomy, Hatay’s cuisine is a vibrant blend of Arabic, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences — from spicy mezes and kibbeh to künefe dessert dripping with syrup.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, culinary explorer, or cultural traveler, Hatay invites you into a world where the past breathes alongside the present, offering a uniquely rich Turkish experience.
