Nestled in the serene village of Hıdırbey in Samandağ, Hatay, the Hıdırbey Musa Ağacı (Moses Tree) stands as a living testament to the region’s rich tapestry of history, spirituality, and natural beauty. This monumental plane tree, believed to be over a millennium old, is not just a botanical marvel but also a revered site steeped in legend and cultural significance.
A Tree Rooted in Legend
According to local lore, the tree marks the spot where Prophet Musa (Moses) and Prophet Hızır met during their journey. It’s said that Prophet Musa, after drinking from a nearby stream, left his staff planted in the ground. Upon returning, he found that the staff had miraculously taken root and blossomed into a sapling. Over centuries, this sapling grew into the colossal tree that now graces the village square. Locals believe the tree sprouted from the legendary “ab-ı hayat” (water of life), attributing its vitality and longevity to this mythical source .
A Natural Monument
The Hıdırbey Musa Ağacı is a protected natural monument, officially registered by the High Council of Immovable Antiquities and Monuments on May 9, 1981. Its impressive dimensions—7.5 meters in trunk diameter and a canopy spreading over 1,000 square meters—make it a focal point for visitors and a symbol of the enduring spirit of the region .
Cultural and Gastronomic Hub
Beyond its historical and spiritual allure, the area surrounding the Musa Ağacı has evolved into a vibrant cultural and gastronomic hub. The Hıdırbey Gastronomievi, housed in the restored Narik Efendi Mansion, offers visitors a taste of both local and international cuisines. Operating from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (closed on Mondays), it provides a unique dining experience under the tree’s expansive canopy .
Adjacent to the tree, the Defne Yolu (Daphne Road) project has transformed the village into a bustling marketplace. Local women operate stalls selling traditional foods like katıklı ekmek (a type of flatbread), various fruit preserves, and handcrafted items. This initiative not only preserves local traditions but also empowers the community economically .
