Cape Gelidonya, located on the southern coast of Türkiye in the Antalya province, is one of the most iconic and untouched natural wonders of the Mediterranean region. Jutting dramatically into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the cape is renowned for its panoramic views, ancient lighthouse, and its position along the famous Lycian Way hiking trail.
The name “Gelidonya” is believed to derive from the Greek “Chelidonia,” meaning “swallow,” a poetic nod to the migrating birds that pass this rugged coastline each year. The cape is home to the Gelidonya Lighthouse (Gelidonya Feneri), which stands stoically atop the cliffs at 227 meters above sea level, guiding sailors safely since 1936. This lighthouse is not only a working beacon but a beloved symbol of solitude and serenity for trekkers and photographers alike.
Reaching Cape Gelidonya requires a bit of effort, which adds to its charm. The site is accessible via a 6–8 km moderate hike from Karaöz village, meandering through fragrant pine forests, wildflowers, and ancient stones that whisper stories of past civilizations. From the lighthouse, visitors are rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the Five Islands (Beş Adalar), once notorious for shipwrecks, including the famed Gelidonya shipwreck, one of the oldest known underwater archaeological finds.
For nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those longing for solitude, Cape Gelidonya offers an unforgettable experience — where the wild soul of the Taurus Mountains meets the timeless rhythm of the Mediterranean.
How to Get There
The nearest town is Kumluca. From Antalya city center (approx. 100 km), drive or take a bus to Kumluca, then head to Karaöz village. From there, hike 6–8 km along the Lycian Way to reach the cape. Sturdy shoes and water are essential.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are ideal, with mild weather and blooming nature. Summer is possible but can be hot during the hike.
