Hadrian’s Gate, Antalya: The Roman Triumph of the Mediterranean
Standing proudly in the heart of Antalya’s historic Kaleiçi district, Hadrian’s Gate is one of the most iconic landmarks in southern Türkiye. This magnificent Roman triumphal arch, built in 130 AD to honor the visit of Emperor Hadrian, marks the gateway between Antalya’s ancient walls and the charming old city. Also known as Üçkapılar (The Three Gates) by locals, Hadrian’s Gate is both an architectural marvel and a symbolic passage into Antalya’s rich past.
Constructed during the Roman period when Antalya was known as Attaleia, the gate is the only remaining entrance still visible within the old city walls. It once served as a ceremonial entry point for emperors and nobles visiting the coastal city. Today, it remains a powerful testament to the glory of Roman engineering, surviving earthquakes, invasions, and the passage of centuries.
The gate features three arched portals supported by four pairs of imposing Corinthian columns made from white marble. These columns are crowned by ornate floral carvings, while above the arches lies a richly decorated frieze adorned with reliefs and inscriptions. Visitors can still see ancient ruts in the stone path, left by the wheels of Roman chariots—offering a tangible link to the city’s imperial past.
In addition to its historical importance, Hadrian’s Gate is a favorite photography spot for both tourists and locals. The sunlight filtering through the arches creates a magical atmosphere, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Beyond the gate, cobblestone streets lead into Kaleiçi, a maze of Ottoman-era houses, boutique hotels, souvenir shops, and restaurants.
Hadrian’s Gate has also become a symbol of cultural continuity, connecting different layers of Antalya’s identity—from Roman to Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman. Restoration efforts in recent decades have helped preserve the structure, while also uncovering statues, inscriptions, and foundation stones that provide insight into life in ancient Attaleia.
