However, many of these monuments were destroyed or removed during the Latin occupation of Constantinople (1204–1261).

The first Ottoman palace was briefly built near this location in 1454, on the site where Istanbul University stands today. Soon afterward, the imperial residence moved to Topkapi Palace.

Later, during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II (1481–1512), the Beyazit Mosque complex (Beyazit Külliyesi) was constructed near the square, giving the area its current name.
