The surrounding of this Cemberlitas Square and Column built by Constantine the Great was the cemetery of the period of Septimius Severus (193-211 A.D.). It was linked to Hippodrome and Augustaion Square (Hagia Sophia Square) with Mese Street as today’s Divanyolu Street.
There is a monument erected in the name of Constantine the Great.Porphyry stones forming the body part of the monument were brought from Rome and mounted to 328 places of it. Statue of Constantine the Great at the top of the monument fell down by a severe hurricane in 1106.
