Tucked away beside the Grand Bazaar’s Nuruosmaniye Gate, Zincirli Han is one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric courtyards — where centuries of trade, craftsmanship, and even cinema history meet. Built in the early 18th century as part of the Nasuh Paşa Külliyesi (Complex), this han once served as a stop for traveling merchants and artisans. Its architecture still reflects the harmony of Ottoman commercial design: a central courtyard surrounded by arcaded galleries, small workshops, and resting rooms on the upper floors.
The han takes its name from the “chain” (zincir) once hung above its entrance. Visitors, regardless of rank, were required to bow their heads under it — a symbolic act of humility before entering a space of honest labor and trade.
Zincirli Han remains deeply connected to its origins within the Nasuh Paşa Complex, which included a mosque, shops, and a bathhouse. While many parts of the külliye have not survived in their original form, the han’s stone walls still carry the signature of that 18th-century urban fabric that defined Istanbul’s trade quarter.
Inside, the air vibrates softly with the sound of hammers and polishing wheels. The upper floors are home to goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelry designers, many of whom have worked here for generations. The lower floor hosts antique shops, calligraphers, and a small tea house — a timeless pause from the chaos of the Grand Bazaar.
Culturally, the han holds a special place not only for Istanbul but also for cinema lovers:
in 1963, parts of the classic James Bond film From Russia with Love were filmed here.
In one of the early sequences, Sean Connery’s 007 moves through Istanbul’s historic bazaars, and the courtyard of Zincirli Han appears briefly — introducing global audiences to this timeless corner of the city decades before modern tourism reached it.
Nearby, Nuruosmaniye Mosque, CaferAğa Medresesi, and the Grand Bazaar create a seamless connection between faith, art, and commerce — three pillars of Istanbul’s old city. Sitting at the han’s tea corner, sipping Turkish tea as artisans work around you, it’s easy to imagine merchants from centuries past resting under the same arches, whispering deals and stories as the muezzin’s call echoed through the stone courtyard.
