A Legendary Fortress Overlooking the Meeting of Two Seas

Perched high above the village of Anadolu Kavağı in Beykoz, Yoros Castle (Yoros Kalesi) guards the northern end of the Bosphorus where it opens to the Black Sea. Known since Byzantine times as “Hieron,” meaning sacred place, this dramatic fortress once served as one of the most strategic points in all of Istanbul.

The original fortifications date back to the 12th century Byzantine Empire, later strengthened by the Genoese and expanded by the Ottomans. From its clifftop position, the castle offered perfect surveillance of ships moving between the Black Sea and the Bosphorus — the very heart of maritime power and trade in medieval Constantinople.

Today, only the ruins of the twin towers and outer walls remain, but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. From this vantage point, you can watch the turquoise waters of the Bosphorus flow north into the deep blue Black Sea, framed by dense green forests on both sides. The wind carries the sound of seagulls, and on clear days you can even see ships waiting to enter the strait.

To reach Yoros Castle, start your walk from the harbor of Anadolu Kavağı, following the uphill road for about 25 minutes. The route winds through narrow streets and shaded paths lined with small cafés serving tea and gözleme — a perfect break before reaching the summit. The castle itself is open-air and free to explore, though access inside the ruins may sometimes be restricted for safety.

At the top, you’ll also find a small café offering refreshments and one of the most beautiful viewing terraces in all of Istanbul. It’s a favorite spot among photographers and couples seeking a sunset moment over the meeting of two seas.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss exploring the surrounding treasures: the coastal charm of Anadolu Kavağı village, the historical Kuleli Military High School along the Bosphorus, and the picturesque districts of Paşabahçe and Kanlıca, all within short driving distance. The nearby Beykoz district center also offers additional attractions such as the glass museum and local markets.

‍♀️ How to Get There

Take the public Bosphorus ferry from Eminönü or Beşiktaş to Anadolu Kavağı, the last stop on the route.
From there, walk uphill (about 1.5 km) following signs for “Yoros Kalesi.”
Alternatively, reach by car from Beykoz and park near the village center before hiking to the site.
