A Seaside Escape of History, Fish, and Breathtaking Views

Nestled on the Asian shore of Istanbul, Anadolu Kavağı is a charming coastal village that marks the final stop of the Bosphorus before it opens to the Black Sea. Just north of Beykoz, this quiet neighborhood feels like a world away from the city’s chaos — a place where history, nature, and the scent of grilled fish blend into one unforgettable scene.

Once a small fishing settlement and a military outpost controlling the Bosphorus, Anadolu Kavağı’s story stretches back to Byzantine times. Its strategic location made it a key defense point, later fortified by the Genoese and Ottomans. Above the village towers Yoros Castle, the medieval fortress that once guarded the entrance to the Black Sea and remains its most iconic landmark.

Wandering through Anadolu Kavağı’s narrow streets, you’ll find colorful houses, fishermen mending their nets, and waterfront seafood restaurants serving freshly caught fish. The village is especially famous for its fish restaurants with panoramic terraces, where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy seabream, calamari, and rakı with a breeze that smells of salt and pine.

The ferry ride to Anadolu Kavağı is an experience in itself — a scenic cruise through the straits lined with palaces, mansions, and forests. The village is the final stop of the Istanbul Bosphorus Tour Ferry, which departs from Eminönü and makes several stops along the way. Arriving by boat gives you the best introduction: the sight of the green hills, the ruined fortress, and the glimmering sea beyond.

For the active traveler, a short uphill hike (about 25 minutes) from the harbor leads to Yoros Castle, offering one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Istanbul — where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea. The path is steep but scenic, winding past chestnut and pine trees, with small cafés along the way.

Anadolu Kavağı retains its small-village charm even as Istanbul has expanded around it. Despite being easily accessible, it feels timeless: a tranquil pocket where seagulls, ferries, and old stone ruins coexist in perfect harmony. It’s a place for slow travel — to breathe, taste, and simply watch the Bosphorus flow north.

How to Get There

Take the public ferry from Eminönü or Beşiktaş on the Bosphorus Line — Anadolu Kavağı is the final stop.
Alternatively, you can reach it by car via Beykoz, following the coastal road north.
From the pier, the village center and fish restaurants are within a few minutes’ walk.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is spring through autumn (April–October), when the ferry schedule runs regularly and restaurants have open terraces.
