Located in Bursa Province, Turkey, the grandeur of Mount Uludag beckons adventurers with its soaring 2,543 meters (8,343 feet) elevation. Known as the “great mountain” in Turkish, its rich history and natural beauty make it an unrivaled destination.
In antiquity, it was part of the vast Olympos range, where the western edge was known as Mysian Olympus and the eastern as Bithynian Olympus. The city of Bursa was even named Prusa ad Olympum due to its proximity to the mountain. Through the Middle Ages, Uludag housed hermitages and monasteries, where notable figures like Saint Joannicius the Great found solace.
As the highest mountain in the Marmara region, Uludag boasts peaks like Kartaltepe at 2,543 meters, surrounded by plateaus like Sarıalan, Kirazlıyayla, Kadıyayla, and Sobra to the north.
Winter enthusiasts find solace in Uludağ as a renowned skiing hub, while summer unveils its natural charm for trekking and camping. The abandoned wolfram mine near the summit adds an intriguing facet to its allure.
Uludag National Park offers a haven for diverse habitats, from oak savannas and lowland deciduous forests to alpine meadows. A refuge for birds like lammergeiers and golden eagles, it’s also home to unique flora, including the Parnassius apollo graslini butterfly.
Accessible by car or cable car, the park’s alpine meadows of Kadiyayla offer breathtaking scenery, and Sarialan provides an ideal endpoint.
With its splendid landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and international sporting events like the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour, Uludag invites all to explore its grandeur.
