Tucked high in the Taurus Mountains within the serene landscapes of Antalya Province lies Selge, a hidden gem of ancient Pisidia. This ancient city, dramatically perched above the Köprülü Canyon National Park, is not just an archaeological site—it is a place where myths whisper through pine forests and the ruins tell stories of resilience, artistry, and forgotten civilizations.
A Glimpse into the Past
Founded by Laconian colonists according to Strabo, Selge dates back to at least the 5th century BCE and flourished during the Roman Empire. With a strategic position on the southern slopes of the Taurus Mountains, Selge was once a powerful and independent city-state. Its citizens were known for their martial spirit and devotion to autonomy, resisting both Alexander the Great and Roman control at times.
Selge minted its own coins and played a significant role in regional trade due to its proximity to ancient routes connecting Pisidia and Pamphylia. Though it eventually submitted to Roman rule, the city remained culturally rich, adorned with public buildings and monuments.
Architectural Highlights
Selge’s layout adapts beautifully to the rugged terrain. One of the best-preserved structures is the Roman Theater, carved into the mountainside, capable of holding up to 10,000 spectators. It reflects Roman architectural prowess while blending seamlessly with the natural slope.
The ruins also feature remnants of city walls, basilicas, a gymnasium, cisterns, and temples, including a possible Zeus temple—their fragments peeking out through pine needles and wildflowers. The city gate and aqueduct arches still stand, hinting at a once-thriving urban center that now peacefully fades into the surrounding landscape.
How to Reach Selge
Reaching Selge is part of the adventure. From Antalya city center, drive approximately 90 km northeast toward Manavgat and then take the scenic road through Köprülü Canyon National Park. The last leg of the journey is a narrow mountain road from the village of Altınkaya (Zerk)—a route that demands patience but rewards with breathtaking views and serenity. It’s highly recommended to go by private car or with a guided tour due to limited public transportation options and road conditions.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Selge is spring (April to June) or autumn (September to early November) when the weather is mild and the wildflowers are in bloom. Summers can be very hot and winters might bring snow or inaccessible roads due to mountainous terrain.
