Just 10 kilometers north of Marmaris, in the heart of the Gulf of Gökova, lies Sedir Island, also famously known as Cleopatra Island. According to legend, Cleopatra and her Roman lover, Mark Antony, once swam and sunbathed on this very beach, captivated by its beauty. To this day, the island continues to enchant visitors with its unique golden sands and turquoise waters.
The beach on Sedir Island is unlike any other in the world. The sand is composed of perfectly rounded grains, uniform in size and color, believed to have been specially brought from North Africa for Cleopatra herself. Some tales even claim that the sand is slightly flammable and can reproduce naturally — a rare geological wonder. Because of its uniqueness, the beach is heavily protected, and removing sand is strictly forbidden by law.
Aside from its legendary beach, Sedir Island is home to the ancient city of Kedrai, dating back to the 6th century BCE. Settled first by the Dorians, Kedrai features well-preserved ruins, including the city walls, ancient theaters, and remnants of temples. A short climb from the beach (about 200 meters) leads visitors into a world where history and myth blend seamlessly.
Sedir Island offers a one-of-a-kind experience where visitors can walk in the footsteps of ancient civilizations, swim in waters once graced by royalty, and marvel at the island’s natural and archaeological beauty.
Boat tours to the island are easily accessible, with regular departures from Akyaka, Çamlı Village, and Marmaris. A visit to Sedir Island is more than a day at the beach — it’s a journey through time, legend, and nature in the heart of Türkiye.
