Letoon Ancient City – A Sacred Sanctuary of Lycia
Located in the heart of ancient Lycia, Letoon Ancient City (Letoon Antik Kenti) is one of the most important religious centers of antiquity, steeped in mythology, mystery, and architectural elegance. Situated near the modern town of Kumluova in the Fethiye district of Muğla Province, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a serene, unforgettable journey into the spiritual life of the Lycian civilization.
A Window into Lycian Mythology
Letoon was not a typical city but rather a sanctuary dedicated to Leto, the mother of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. According to legend, Leto was chased out of many lands by Hera, Zeus’s wife, and finally found refuge in Lycia, where she gave birth to her divine children near a sacred spring. The site flourished from the 7th century BCE to the Roman era and was considered a center of worship and oracular prophecy.
The three adjacent temples—dedicated to Leto, Apollo, and Artemis—form the core of the sanctuary. Although partially ruined, their foundations and remaining columns convey the grandeur of the past. The Temple of Leto, the largest of the three, showcases fine Hellenistic design with Ionic columns and a stepped platform.
Letoon’s Theatre and Inscriptions
Letoon is also home to a small yet remarkably preserved theatre dating to the 2nd century BCE. Carved into the hillside and seating up to 5,000 spectators, the theatre offers both a physical and metaphorical stage into the region’s classical heritage.
One of Letoon’s most significant discoveries is the Trilingual Inscription, found in 1973, which features text in Lycian, Greek, and Aramaic. This stele played a key role in deciphering the Lycian language and provides deep insight into the multilingual nature of the Lycian League.
Tranquil Atmosphere and Natural Beauty
Today, Letoon offers a peaceful, uncrowded alternative to more visited ancient cities. The sanctuary is surrounded by lush reeds, olive groves, and the distant silhouettes of the Taurus Mountains. In spring, the area bursts with wildflowers, and turtles can often be seen in the sacred pool believed to be connected to the myth of Leto.
The lack of modern development around Letoon enhances the spiritual feel of the ruins. Unlike Ephesus or Aphrodisias, visitors can wander the site in near solitude, imagining the ancient priests conducting rituals, oracles being sought, and worshippers traveling from all over Lycia.
Nearby Attractions
Letoon is just 4 km from the ancient city of Xanthos, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the capital of Lycia. A visit to both sites in a single trip is highly recommended. Patara Beach, one of Türkiye’s most beautiful stretches of sand, is also nearby—making Letoon an ideal stop for history lovers en route to the coast.
Preservation and UNESCO Status
Letoon, together with Xanthos, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its outstanding representation of Lycian civilization and architecture. Archaeological work continues at the site, shedding more light on Lycian religious practices, urban planning, and their interaction with other Mediterranean cultures.
How to Get There
Letoon is about 65 km southeast of Fethiye and can be accessed by car or guided tour. From Fethiye, take the D400 highway toward Kaş, and turn off at Kumluova. From there, clear signage leads directly to the archaeological site. Public transportation to Kumluova is also available from Fethiye and Kaş.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Letoon is between April and June or September and early November when the weather is pleasant and the site is lush and green. Summer months can be quite hot, but the early morning or late afternoon visits offer cooler temperatures and better photography conditions.
