Kaunos Ancient City is one of the most atmospheric and historically layered archaeological sites in southwestern Türkiye, located near Dalyan in Muğla Province. Set between the Dalyan River, ancient marshlands, and the Mediterranean coastline, Kaunos uniquely reflects the meeting point of Carian, Lycian, Greek, and Roman civilizations.
Founded at least in the 9th century BCE, Kaunos was originally a major harbor city with direct access to the sea. Over time, sedimentation from the Dalyan River transformed the coastline, leaving Kaunos inland and contributing to its gradual decline. Despite this, the city flourished for centuries as an important center of trade, politics, and culture.
Kaunos is best known for its monumental rock-cut tombs, carved high into the cliffs overlooking the river. These tombs, inspired by temple façades, symbolize the city’s wealth and its elite burial traditions. The site also features a well-preserved theatre, agora, Roman baths, Byzantine basilica, harbor structures, and extensive city walls.
Historically, Kaunos shifted allegiances between Caria and Lycia, later becoming part of the Roman Republic and Empire. In the Byzantine period, it remained active before being gradually abandoned due to malaria caused by surrounding wetlands.
Today, Kaunos offers visitors a rare combination of archaeology and nature. Accessed by boat or on foot from Dalyan, the city provides panoramic views, tranquil walking paths, and one of the most iconic ancient landscapes in Türkiye.
