Above the Clouds, Beyond the Noise
Pokut Yaylası – Rize, Türkiye: A Cloud-Kissed Highland Paradise
Perched at an altitude of approximately 2,050 meters above sea level, Pokut Yaylası is one of the most iconic highland plateaus in the Black Sea region of Türkiye, nestled deep within the Fırtına Valley of Rize’s Çamlıhemşin district. Renowned for its fairy-tale views, traditional wooden houses, and sea of clouds rolling beneath the mountain peaks, Pokut is a perfect escape for travelers in search of serenity, nature, and authentic village life.
A Highland Where Time Slows Down
Pokut Yaylası is a preserved slice of heaven where ancient traditions, alpine beauty, and modern curiosity meet. The name “Pokut” is believed to originate from Armenian, meaning “windy valley,” a name that suits its breezy ridges and open skies. Life here follows the rhythm of nature, where locals still maintain their wooden homes and livestock herding traditions during the summer months. The plateau is surrounded by dense forests of spruce and fir, and when clouds roll into the valley below, visitors are treated to the unforgettable sight of peaks floating above a misty white ocean.
Breathtaking Views and Nearby Plateaus
One of the best reasons to visit Pokut is to witness its sunrise and sunset—golden hues spill over the mountains, reflecting off the traditional houses and lighting up the sea of clouds. You can hike from Pokut to nearby Sal Yaylası, another mesmerizing plateau connected by a scenic 15-20 minute walk. The trail passes through forest paths and opens up to equally stunning vistas. Both yaylas preserve their original wooden architecture and unspoiled nature, making the journey between them a highlight for nature lovers and photographers.
Traditional Life and Local Hospitality
Unlike more commercialized destinations, Pokut retains a village charm that’s hard to find elsewhere. Electricity only arrived here recently, and mobile signal remains weak—making it the perfect digital detox. Instead, travelers can enjoy traditional Black Sea hospitality at rustic pensions and family-run guesthouses. Breakfasts often feature locally made butter, fresh cheese, honey, and warm “mıhlama” (a rich cornmeal and cheese dish native to the region).
Locals are known for their warmth and storytelling, sharing tales of past winters and highland culture. During summer, when the yayla is at its liveliest, shepherds graze their animals on the slopes and children play freely in the flower-speckled fields.
Climate and Nature
Because of its high altitude, Pokut enjoys a cool climate even in the peak of summer. July and August are the warmest months, yet daytime temperatures rarely exceed 20–22°C (68–71°F). Rain and fog are common year-round, enhancing the mystical feel of the environment. For nature enthusiasts, this plateau offers excellent opportunities for trekking, birdwatching, stargazing, and macro photography, thanks to its alpine flora and dramatic cloudscapes.
How to Get There
Getting to Pokut Yaylası requires some effort, but the rewards are immense. From Rize city center, drive toward Çamlıhemşin (approximately 1.5 hours). From Çamlıhemşin village, it’s a 10 km climb to Pokut, but the road is unpaved, narrow, and often challenging. A 4×4 vehicle is strongly recommended, especially during rainy weather. Some visitors choose to park in the lower areas and hike up to enjoy the scenery. Guided tours from Rize or Ayder are also available for easier access.
Best Time to Visit
The most suitable time to visit Pokut is between June and September. During these months, the weather is relatively dry, and the highland is lush and vibrant. Snow covers the area in winter, making it inaccessible by regular vehicles and turning it into a quiet, untouched snowscape.
