Nestled in the heart of Demre, Antalya, Myra Ancient City is one of the most mesmerizing archaeological treasures in Türkiye, once a thriving center of the ancient Lycian League. With its awe-inspiring rock-cut tombs, grand Roman theater, and deep historical ties to Saint Nicholas (known as Santa Claus), Myra stands as a testament to centuries of spiritual and civic grandeur.
The city’s name, derived from the Greek word for “myrrh,” reflects its ancient role in regional trade and culture. Myra was first mentioned in Lycian inscriptions in the 1st century BCE and flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The highlight of the site is undoubtedly the acropolis, where dozens of tombs are intricately carved into the cliffs, resembling miniature houses for the dead. Below lies the Roman theater, remarkably preserved, with capacity for thousands of spectators.
Myra’s significance expanded further during the early Christian period. It became the bishopric of Saint Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop whose life inspired the Santa Claus legend. While his church lies nearby in Demre, Myra itself offers a spiritual ambiance that attracts history lovers and pilgrims alike.
Visitors today can walk among the ruins where ancient Lycian, Roman, and Byzantine civilizations overlapped, all set against the backdrop of lush Mediterranean landscapes. Informational plaques, well-maintained paths, and serene surroundings make this site accessible and evocative.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a curious traveler, Myra invites you to explore a multi-layered past shaped by myth, faith, and power.
