Nestled between forested mountains and the deep blue Mediterranean, Phaselis Ancient City is one of the most captivating archaeological sites in Antalya Province, Türkiye. This former Lycian port town offers a unique blend of historical wonder and natural splendor, drawing in travelers who seek both cultural depth and scenic tranquility.
Founded in the 7th century BCE by settlers from Rhodes, Phaselis quickly rose to prominence as a commercial harbor, uniquely positioned with three natural bays. These harbors — North, Central, and South — made Phaselis a vital maritime link between East and West, contributing to its strategic and economic importance through the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods.
Walking through the site, visitors are greeted by a grand colonnaded street that once connected the harbor with the heart of the city. Roman aqueducts, agoras, baths, and theaters stand in silent testimony to the city’s former prosperity. The theater, carved into a hillside and overlooking the sea, is one of the most evocative spots on the site — imagine the waves crashing below as audiences enjoyed performances under the Anatolian sun.
One of the most striking features of Phaselis is its natural harmony with the surrounding landscape. Unlike many ancient cities, which are now landlocked or surrounded by urban sprawl, Phaselis sits peacefully within the pine-scented forest of Beydağları Coastal National Park. The backdrop of Mount Tahtalı and the crystal-clear waters creates a postcard-perfect scene. It’s not uncommon to spot visitors enjoying a swim or picnic on the beach after exploring the ruins — making this one of the few places in the world where you can walk from an ancient agora straight into the sea.
Over the centuries, Phaselis was ruled by various powers including the Persians, Alexander the Great, the Romans, and the Byzantines. Despite periods of looting and piracy, it remained a significant city well into the early Middle Ages before gradually losing prominence as neighboring cities like Antalya (Attaleia) rose in importance.
For photographers, history buffs, and nature lovers alike, Phaselis is a dream location. The ruins are well preserved, and the layout of the city remains clearly visible, giving a strong sense of what daily life may have been like during its golden age. Whether you’re tracing the ancient roads, resting under the shade of Roman columns, or listening to the whisper of pine trees, the site invites a deep connection with the past.
The site is part of the Phaselis Archaeological Site and Olympos Beydağları Coastal National Park, and is managed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye. Facilities on-site include restrooms, walking paths, and shaded picnic areas. While there are no restaurants directly inside the archaeological zone, the nearby town of Tekirova offers a variety of dining and accommodation options.
Phaselis is also a perfect stop on a broader Lycian Way itinerary or as a half-day trip from Kemer, Antalya, or Olympos. It is especially popular in summer, though visiting in spring or autumn offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds — perfect for in-depth exploration or contemplative moments by the shore.
Whether you’re following the footsteps of ancient traders, diving into local myths, or simply enjoying the breeze over turquoise waters, Phaselis Ancient City leaves a lasting impression — a peaceful reminder of how civilizations once thrived in rhythm with nature.
How to Get There
Phaselis is located just 15 km south of Kemer and 58 km from Antalya city center. From Antalya, you can take the D400 highway heading west toward Kumluca. Turn off at Tekirova, and the site is clearly signposted from the main road. The nearest town is Tekirova, from where minibuses and taxis are available. Private tours and day trips from Antalya also frequently include Phaselis as part of their route.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Phaselis is during the spring (April–June) or autumn (September–November). These seasons offer mild weather, ideal for walking among the ruins and enjoying the beaches without the heat and crowds of summer. Early morning visits during summer are also recommended to avoid midday heat.
