Didyma, located in the Didim district of Aydın Province, Türkiye, is one of the ancient world’s most famous oracle centers. Approximately 70 km from Kuşadası, Didyma is most renowned for the Temple of Apollo.
In ancient times, Didyma was considered a sacred site (hieros), primarily a location for prophecy and worship, rather than a city in itself. The Temple of Apollo, one of the largest temples of the ancient world, was intended to be an immense structure, but construction was never completed. Nevertheless, the vast dimensions of the temple, its towering columns, and finely detailed reliefs continue to captivate visitors today.
The oracle center in Didyma was as famous as the Delphi Oracle in ancient Greece. Priests would relay prophecies from Apollo, guiding visitors with divine insight. Today, visitors can walk through the sacred precincts of the temple and experience the mystical atmosphere that once existed here.
Didyma, along with Priene and Miletus, forms an ideal ancient history tour route. The area around the temple also features several restaurants and souvenir shops.
