Hidden in the fertile valleys of southwestern Türkiye, Aphrodisias is one of the most captivating ancient cities in the world—an open-air museum of art, beauty, and divine devotion. Named after Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of Greco-Roman architecture and urban design, nestled in the modern-day village of Geyre in Aydın Province.
Aphrodisias was not only a center for religion but also for art and philosophy. Its sculptors were famous throughout the Roman Empire, and the city’s School of Sculpture produced exquisite marble works, many of which still lie scattered in remarkably well-preserved ruins. Walking through the marble-paved streets of Aphrodisias is like stepping back in time to a world where art was sacred and beauty was a form of worship.
A City Dedicated to Aphrodite
Founded in the 2nd century BCE, Aphrodisias quickly became an important religious and cultural hub of ancient Caria. Its heart was the Temple of Aphrodite, built in the 1st century BCE, and later converted into a Christian basilica. The temple’s elegant Ionic columns and tranquil setting make it a breathtaking centerpiece for any visit.
Just behind the temple lies a massive Stadium, one of the best-preserved from antiquity, capable of seating more than 30,000 spectators. Measuring 270 meters in length, it hosted athletic contests, gladiator fights, and public ceremonies. Its state of preservation is extraordinary—few ancient stadiums in the world remain so intact.
