Caddebostan is one of the most prestigious and livable neighborhoods on İstanbul’s Asian side, located within Kadıköy district. Bordered by the Marmara Sea to the south, Suadiye to the east, Fenerbahçe to the west, and Göztepe and Erenköy to the north, Caddebostan combines coastal tranquility with strong urban infrastructure.

The neighborhood is best known for its long seaside promenade, historic beach, expansive parks, and proximity to Bağdat Avenue, one of İstanbul’s most famous shopping streets. Cultural life is anchored by the Caddebostan Cultural Center (CKM), while cafés, restaurants, and tea gardens line both the coast and inner streets. A dedicated coastal bicycle path, rare by İstanbul standards, further enhances everyday quality of life.
🏛️ History & Name Origins
During the Byzantine period, the area was known as Ruphinianus or Drys, reflecting its semi-rural coastal identity. In the Ottoman era, the land between Bostancı and Göztepe was covered with gardens and orchards. Due to its dense vegetation, it became a hiding place for Janissary deserters and criminals, earning the name “Cadı Bostanı” (Witch’s Garden).
Following the abolition of the Janissary Corps in 1826, the gardens were dismantled and the area gradually urbanized. Over time, the name evolved into Caddebostan, symbolizing its transformation from agricultural land into a refined residential neighborhood.
🏖️ Coastline, Beaches & Outdoor Life
Caddebostan Coast and Beach remain among İstanbul’s rare urban seaside spaces where swimming, sunbathing, and water sports are still possible. The historic Caddebostan Beach attracts locals throughout the summer, while activities such as rowing and windsurfing add to the area’s active lifestyle.
The coastline also features walking and cycling paths with open views toward the Princes’ Islands. Bike rentals, cafés, and small food spots make it easy to spend entire days outdoors without leaving the neighborhood.
🌳 Parks & Daily Life
Green spaces are a defining feature of Caddebostan. 60. Yıl Parkı, Caddebostan Dalyan Parkı, and historic estates like Sabiha Hanım Grove offer shaded walking paths and picnic areas overlooking the sea. Locals often gather here with books, music, and drinks, especially in the afternoons and early evenings.
Architectural landmarks such as Ragıp Paşa Köşkü (popularly known as the “haunted mansion”), Galib Paşa Mosque, and historic waterfront mansions add depth to the neighborhood’s visual character.
🚇 Transportation & Accessibility
Caddebostan is well-connected by bus and dolmuş routes running along the coastal axis and Bağdat Avenue. The upcoming 60. Yıl Parkı Metro Station, part of the Göztepe–Ataşehir–Ümraniye line, is expected to open by the end of 2025, significantly improving rail access.
Historically, the neighborhood had a pier connecting it to maritime routes. Plans for a new Caddebostan Pier, announced by İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, remain at the planning stage, aiming to reintegrate sea transport into daily mobility.
