Just a few steps from Galatasaray Square, between İstiklal Avenue and Sahne Street, stands one of Beyoğlu’s most beautiful covered arcades — Avrupa Pasajı, also known as the “European Arcade.”
Built in 1874 after the great Beyoğlu fire, it was designed in the Neo-Renaissance style by architect Pulgher to resemble the elegant shopping galleries of Paris and Milan.

The passage once connected Istanbul’s European-influenced high society with its emerging modern trades. Its façade, crowned by sculpted figures of mythological gods and goddesses, symbolized prosperity and the fusion of East and West that defined 19th-century Pera.

Inside, sunlight filters through a glass roof onto polished marble floors, casting reflections on shop windows filled with antiques, mirrors, jewelry, and books. For over a century, Avrupa Pasajı has been home to antique dealers, art sellers, tailors, and souvenir shops, many of which have operated here for generations. Walking through it feels like stepping into another era — where the echoes of carriage wheels outside fade into soft conversation and the distant sound of street musicians from İstiklal drift through the air.

The passage also holds a special place in Istanbul’s cultural memory. Artists, actors, and writers of the early Republic era often met here for coffee or to browse rare items before performances at nearby theaters. Even today, it remains a favorite stop for photographers and filmmakers who seek the visual poetry of Beyoğlu’s old arcades.

Nearby, Çiçek Pasajı, Nevizade Sokak, and Asmalımescit form the vibrant heart of Beyoğlu’s nightlife and dining scene, while the Pera Museum and Galata Tower lie within walking distance. Together, they represent the living bridge between Istanbul’s cosmopolitan past and present.

Whether you come to shop for a vintage trinket or simply wander under its graceful arches, Avrupa Pasajı offers a glimpse of the city’s European spirit — elegant yet warmly familiar, timeless yet ever alive.
