History of Galata Tower

The current Galata Tower was built in 1348 by the Genoese, who had established a trading colony in the Galata district during the Byzantine period.

The tower originally formed part of the defensive walls of the Genoese colony, serving as the main watchtower protecting the settlement.

In 1446, the structure was further strengthened as the surrounding city walls were expanded.

The tower was severely damaged during the great earthquake of 1509, which destroyed the upper sections of the structure. It was later repaired by architect Murat bin Hayrettin, and the upper part of the tower dates from the Ottoman period.

Uses During the Ottoman Period

Throughout the Ottoman era, the tower served several different purposes.

During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the tower was used as a prison.

Later, under Sultan Murad III, the tower briefly functioned as an observatory.

One of the most famous legends connected to the tower tells the story of Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi, who is said to have flown from the top of Galata Tower using artificial wings and landed in Üsküdar during the reign of Sultan Murad IV.

Architecture of the Tower

Galata Tower stands at a height of over 60 meters and has a base diameter of approximately 16.45 meters.

The thick stone walls of the tower, measuring around 3.75 meters, were built using rubble stone typical of medieval defensive architecture.

The conical roof and circular structure give the tower its distinctive silhouette, making it one of the most recognizable structures on the Istanbul skyline.

Restoration and Modern Use

The tower underwent a major restoration between 1964 and 1967, during which an elevator was added to allow visitors to reach the upper levels more easily.

Today the tower serves primarily as a tourist attraction and observation point.

From the upper balcony, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of:
