Hidden in the lush green valley of Kütahya’s Çavdarhisar district, Aizanoi Ancient City is one of Türkiye’s most spectacular and underrated archaeological treasures. Once the political, religious, and economic heart of the Phrygian region, Aizanoi thrived under Roman rule between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Today, it captivates visitors with its remarkably well-preserved monuments, offering a journey into the daily life, power structures, and spirituality of ancient Anatolia.
Historical Significance
The city was originally founded by the Phrygians, but its golden age came under the Romans. Aizanoi was granted the status of conventus—a regional administrative center of the Roman Empire—and became a symbol of imperial wealth and architecture. Coins minted here bear witness to its economic importance, and archaeological digs continue to uncover layers of its past.
Must-See Highlights
Temple of Zeus: Arguably the best-preserved Roman temple in Türkiye, built in the 2nd century AD. The temple is perched on a podium, beneath which lie vaulted chambers thought to be used for cult rituals. Its grandeur still commands awe today.
Theatre-Stadium Complex: A rare architectural design unique to Aizanoi. This 15,000-capacity structure combined a Roman theatre on one side with a stadium on the other—separated by a stage building.
Macellum (Ancient Market): Known for hosting the Edict of Maximum Prices by Emperor Diocletian—one of the earliest examples of economic regulation. The round structure remains largely intact.
Roman Baths, Bridges, and Colonnaded Streets: Explore everyday Roman life through these urban remnants.
Aizanoi Archaeological Museum: A modern addition to the site, housing sculptures, coins, and religious artifacts excavated from the ruins.
Narrative Experience
Walking through Aizanoi feels like stepping into a living museum. The whispers of ancient merchants echo in the Macellum, while the massive columns of the Zeus Temple rise above the countryside like timeless sentinels. Whether you’re an amateur historian, an architecture enthusiast, or a curious traveler, Aizanoi offers an intimate connection with the ancient world—without the crowds of more famous sites.
How to Get There
Aizanoi is located 50 km from Kütahya city center. It’s accessible by car or minibus via the D230 road. Visitors traveling from İstanbul or İzmir can reach Kütahya by intercity bus or train and then take a local connection to Çavdarhisar.
