Tucked away in the lush valleys of northeastern Erzurum, Uzundere is a hidden gem that has recently gained recognition as one of Türkiye’s official Cittaslow (slow cities). With its breathtaking natural beauty, rich historical roots, and tranquil village atmosphere, Uzundere offers a soothing counterbalance to the fast-paced modern world. This peaceful district is the perfect destination for travelers seeking authenticity, sustainability, and serenity.
A Town with a Slow Soul
Uzundere earned its Cittaslow title in 2016, becoming the first and only such town in Eastern Anatolia. The Cittaslow movement emphasizes preserving local traditions, promoting eco-friendly living, and supporting small-scale agriculture and crafts. Visitors to Uzundere will immediately sense the unhurried pace of life, where nature and community come first.
Set amidst the forested slopes of the Pontic Mountains and watered by the Çoruh River, Uzundere’s landscape is dotted with apple orchards, organic farms, and stone-built village homes that have preserved their original character for generations.
History and Culture
Uzundere’s historical significance stems from its location along ancient trade routes and its position near the Georgian border. The area is home to one of the most impressive examples of medieval Georgian architecture in Türkiye: the Osk Vank Monastery (Öşk Vank). Built in the 10th century during the Georgian Bagratid dynasty, this stone monastery stands in a remote forest setting and features intricate bas-reliefs and cross motifs on its walls. It is one of the few remaining Georgian Orthodox churches in Türkiye and is a must-see for history lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike.
The region also holds several traditional stone bridges and remnants of Ottoman-period architecture, giving visitors the sense of stepping back in time.

Spring brings wildflowers, while autumn offers colorful foliage and harvest festivals. Winter months can be harsh due to snowfall, but the snowy mountain scenery has its own charm for adventurous travelers.
A Story from the Valley
While sipping hot çay on a wooden bench in the village square, I met an elderly woman weaving a kilim. She told me how her grandmother used to walk for hours to the Osk Vank Monastery every Sunday. “Not to pray only,” she laughed, “but to meet friends and trade fresh apples for wool.” In Uzundere, stories aren’t just told—they’re lived every day, passed down through flavors, pathways, and smiles.
