Mount Chimaera (Yanartaş) – Eternal Flames of Myth and Nature in Çıralı, Antalya, Türkiye
Tucked away in the pine-scented foothills of the Taurus Mountains near the peaceful village of Çıralı, the mysterious Mount Chimaera (Yanartaş) is one of the most unusual natural wonders in Türkiye. Known since antiquity for its eternal flames that flicker from vents in the rocky mountainside, Mount Chimaera has captured the imagination of travelers, geologists, and myth-lovers alike for thousands of years.
These natural gas flames, which have been burning for millennia, are believed to have inspired the legend of the Chimaera—a fire-breathing mythical creature in Greek mythology. Today, visitors hike to the site by day or night to witness the surreal sight of flames emerging directly from the stone, creating an otherworldly atmosphere especially after sunset.
A Natural and Mythical Marvel
The name Yanartaş literally means “flaming stone” in Turkish. It refers to a cluster of small flames scattered across a rocky slope about 200 to 250 meters above sea level. The fire is caused by the spontaneous ignition of methane and other gases seeping through the rock. Scientific explanation aside, the ancient Greeks believed this to be the fiery breath of the Chimaera—a hybrid creature said to be part lion, part goat, and part serpent—slain by the hero Bellerophon, who rode the winged horse Pegasus.
The site has been referenced in ancient texts, including those by Pliny the Elder and Strabo. During the Roman period, the area was even used as a natural lighthouse for sailors navigating the Lycian coast.
The Hike and What to Expect
Reaching Yanartaş requires a moderately challenging 1-kilometer uphill hike along a forested trail. The path is well-maintained and shaded by pine trees, making it an enjoyable walk, although wearing sturdy shoes and bringing water is essential. Entrance is through a small ticket gate, and there are benches along the route for rest.
Visiting after dusk is particularly popular. The flames are more visible in the dark, and the setting becomes even more mystical as they flicker under the stars. Many visitors bring marshmallows or snacks to roast over the open fire—a modern ritual at an ancient site.
Connection to Nearby Attractions
Yanartaş is located near the tranquil beach village of Çıralı, within the Olympos-Beydağları Coastal National Park. This makes it an ideal stop for travelers exploring southern Antalya’s natural and historical richness. Just a few kilometers away lies the ancient city of Olympos, with its ruined temples, baths, and necropolis nestled in the forest near the sea.
The area is also famous for its pristine beaches, loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting grounds, and eco-conscious guesthouses. The laid-back atmosphere of Çıralı provides a peaceful retreat from the more crowded tourist resorts along the coast.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Visit: Sunset and evening hours offer the most dramatic views of the flames.
Bring a flashlight or headlamp if visiting at night, as the path is not well lit.
Wear proper footwear for the hike.

Whether you’re a mythology enthusiast, a lover of unique geological formations, or a curious traveler looking for an offbeat experience, Mount Chimaera offers an unforgettable encounter with nature’s raw elements and the echoes of ancient stories.
