Where the sea, art, and everyday life meet
Moda is one of İstanbul’s most beloved seaside neighborhoods, located on the Asian side of the city within Kadıköy district. Geographically, Moda lies between Kadıköy’s central core and Kurbağalıdere (Yoğurtçu Parkı), forming a natural transition zone between urban life and the Marmara Sea.
The neighborhood sits along the route of Kadıköy’s iconic nostalgic tram, making it easily accessible while preserving a calm, village-like rhythm. Moda is especially famous for its historic tea gardens, waterfront promenades, ice cream shops, and uninterrupted sea views—elements that have long defined its social character.

🏛️ History & Urban Identity
The name Moda is often associated with All Saints Moda Church, built in 1878 following the Crimean War, yet historical sources suggest the name predates the church. In Kâtip Çelebi’s 17th-century work Cihânnümâ, the area already appears as Moda on early maps of İstanbul, indicating a much older toponym.
Before extensive coastal landfills reshaped the shoreline, Moda was characterized by active sea cliffs (falezler). These are now considered “dead cliffs,” remnants of the neighborhood’s original coastal geology. Once home to natural beaches such as Moda Plajı and Lozan Plajı, the coastline gradually transformed into public promenades and parks.
During the late 1990s, a controversial road and bridge project proposed along the Moda shoreline sparked widespread public opposition, fueled by fears that the coast would be converted into a highway. Thanks to civic resistance and decisions by the Conservation Council, the project was ultimately canceled—cementing Moda’s reputation as a neighborhood deeply committed to protecting its coastline and lifestyle.
⚓ Moda İskelesi & Cultural Life
The historic Moda Pier (Moda İskelesi) has played multiple roles over the decades—from ferry terminal to restaurant, and later a focal point of public protest in 2008 following changes to its use. In 2022, it was reactivated through a sensitive restoration project, reopening as a hybrid ferry terminal, library, and café, restoring direct sea access to the neighborhood.

Today, Moda stands out for its high quality of life, shaped by walkability, cultural institutions, independent bookstores, theaters, and long-standing educational establishments. Residents value its slow pace, strong neighborhood bonds, and proximity to nature despite being in one of İstanbul’s largest metropolitan areas.
