Khedive’s Palace (Hidiv Kasrı) – Istanbul’s Hidden Belle Époque Gem Overlooking the Bosphorus

Nestled within the tranquil Çubuklu Grove in Istanbul’s Beykoz district, Khedive’s Palace—known locally as Hidiv Kasrı—is a magnificent blend of neo-classical and Art Nouveau architecture. Built in 1907, this stunning estate was commissioned by Abbas Hilmi Pasha II, the last Ottoman-appointed Khedive of Egypt and Sudan. Today, the palace stands as an exquisite historical venue, surrounded by nature, offering breathtaking views of the Bosphorus and a serene escape from Istanbul’s vibrant urban core.

A Glimpse Into Ottoman-Egyptian Elegance

Khedive’s Palace is a reflection of a time when European architectural styles were being infused into Ottoman aesthetics. Designed by Italian architect Delfo Seminati, the palace is adorned with stained glass, floral motifs, iron railings, and intricate wooden details—hallmarks of Art Nouveau elegance. With its grand marble staircase, tall clock tower, and octagonal tower peeking through pine trees, the palace evokes a fairytale-like ambiance.

Abbas Hilmi Pasha used this mansion primarily as a summer residence during his visits to İstanbul. The palace was strategically built atop one of the highest hills on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, allowing the Khedive and his guests to enjoy sweeping views of the strait.

After the Khedive’s political career ended in 1914, the palace passed through various owners and periods of abandonment until it was restored in the 1980s by Turing (Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kurumu). Since then, it has been transformed into a public attraction, hosting a restaurant, café, and event venue.
