Nestled along the rugged cliffs of the Euphrates River in eastern Türkiye, Kemaliye is a hidden gem that seamlessly weaves nature, history, and culture into one unforgettable destination. Formerly known as Eğin, this enchanting district of Erzincan Province offers dramatic canyons, historic stone houses, Ottoman streetscapes, and a way of life that feels timeless. Recognized as a Cittaslow (Slow City), Kemaliye is the kind of place where you pause, breathe, and reconnect.

A Glimpse into History

Kemaliye’s history dates back to antiquity. Once called Eğin, the town has seen diverse civilizations, including the Urartians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. Its strategic location along the Silk Road contributed to its development as a vibrant trade and cultural hub. During the early Republican era, in honor of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the town was renamed Kemaliye.

The town was historically home to both Turkish and Armenian populations, and this cultural richness is still visible in the architecture, crafts, and oral traditions. Many homes are built using traditional stone masonry and wooden balconies, with intricate latticework known as “cumba,” creating a harmony between form and function that echoes through time.

Natural Wonders & Outdoor Adventure

One of Kemaliye’s most iconic features is the Dark Canyon (Karanlık Kanyon), a colossal gorge carved by the Euphrates River. It ranks among the world’s deepest canyons and attracts adrenaline lovers from around the globe. The narrow Taş Yolu (Stone Road), chiseled into the cliff face by hand over decades, is a breathtaking engineering feat and a favorite for daring mountain bikers and road trippers.

The area is a haven for rock climbing, base jumping, rafting, and hiking. Each year, Kemaliye hosts the International Outdoor Sports Festival, drawing athletes and adventure seekers to test themselves against nature’s extremes.

Architectural Heritage

Walking through Kemaliye feels like stepping into a living museum. The old town preserves dozens of traditional Ottoman houses, narrow cobblestone lanes, and fountains that have quenched travelers’ thirst for centuries. Don’t miss the Lökhane, where locals still make “lök,” a kind of fruit leather passed down through generations.

The Ali Demirsoy Natural History Museum, part of Hacettepe University’s project, showcases regional biodiversity and paleontological findings. It adds a fascinating scientific layer to the town’s already rich narrative.

Culinary Traditions

Kemaliye’s cuisine is shaped by its geography and history. The standout is “lök”, a dried fruit paste made from mulberries, apricots, or grapes. You’ll also find hearty regional dishes like etli yaprak sarma (stuffed vine leaves with meat), homemade pestil (fruit pulp sheets), and Eğin tava, a rich meat and vegetable stew cooked in a stone oven. Everything is made fresh, often with ingredients sourced from surrounding gardens or foraged in nearby hills.

How to Get There

Kemaliye is relatively remote, which is part of its charm.

  • By Car: From Erzincan city center, it’s approximately 180 km (about 3.5 hours).

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Erzincan Yıldırım Akbulut Airport (ERC), with flights from major cities like Istanbul and Ankara.

  • By Train: You can also arrive via the famous Eastern Express (Doğu Ekspresi), stopping at Erzincan or Erzurum, followed by a scenic drive to Kemaliye.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is late spring through early autumn (May to October). Summers are warm and perfect for outdoor activities, while spring and autumn offer cooler weather and stunning natural colors. Winter brings snow and silence, giving the town an almost mystical atmosphere, though road access may be limited due to conditions.
