Discover Kadifekale: The Velvet Fortress of İzmir
Rising 186 meters above sea level, Kadifekale – literally “The Velvet Castle” – offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of İzmir and its shimmering gulf. Perched atop Mount Pagos (known in antiquity as Pagus), this ancient hilltop fortress is steeped in history, mythology, and scenic beauty.
A Fortress Founded by Legends
Kadifekale’s origins trace back to the 3rd century BC, when Lysimachos, a general under Alexander the Great, built the first defensive walls here. According to ancient legend, Alexander had a divine dream on this hill under a plane tree, where goddesses instructed him to found a city on Pagos. Inspired, he re-established Smyrna (modern İzmir) on this very site, shaping the city’s destiny for centuries to come.
Today, visitors can still see parts of the original fortifications, silently watching over İzmir, as they have done for over two millennia.
A Journey Through Time and Culture
Visiting Kadifekale is more than a historical experience – it’s a glimpse into the vibrant life of the region. During the day, you may spot local women from southeastern Turkey, especially Mardin, weaving traditional carpets on horizontal looms, a craft that is becoming increasingly rare.
Don’t miss the sunset views – the golden light spilling over the city and the gulf makes for a magical moment and perfect photo opportunity.
How to Get There
Reaching Kadifekale is easy. You can take Bus 33 from Konak Square, which will carry you up to the entrance. Many visitors choose to walk part of the way down, enjoying the views along the descent. However, note that the surrounding neighborhood can be rough; it is advisable not to walk alone after dark.
Kadifekale Today
In recent years, renovation and restoration efforts led by İzmir’s metropolitan municipality have breathed new life into the site. In 2020, Kadifekale became a UNESCO Tentative World Heritage Site as part of “The Historical Port City of İzmir,” highlighting its cultural and historical significance.
Travel Tips:
- Best time to visit: Late afternoon, for cooler temperatures and stunning sunsets.
- Don’t forget your camera – the views are unmissable.
- Combine with a visit to Agora of Smyrna for a deeper dive into İzmir’s ancient past.
