Discover the İzmir Ethnography Museum: A Journey into 19th Century Aegean Life
Nestled in the heart of İzmir’s historic Konak district, the İzmir Ethnography Museum offers a captivating glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the Aegean region. Housed in a striking 19th-century neoclassical building, the museum invites visitors to step back in time and explore the traditions, crafts, and daily life of the people of İzmir and its surroundings.
A Historic Building with a Storied Past
Built on a sloped terrace, the museum’s building was originally constructed in 1831 and served as St. Roch Hospital. In 1845, it was restored by the French and transformed into a care facility for impoverished Christian families. Over the years, it functioned as a public health institute and later as the Provincial Health Directorate. In 1984, it was handed over to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to be repurposed as a museum, and after careful restoration, it opened its doors in 1987 as the İzmir Ethnography Museum.
The structure consists of three levels above a ground floor. While the first and second floors serve as exhibition halls, the top floor houses the İzmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism.
Exhibits That Bring the Past to Life
The museum’s exhibitions focus on the 19th-century social life and traditional crafts of İzmir and the surrounding region. As industrialization has led to the decline of many artisanal trades, the museum seeks to preserve and showcase these vanishing practices. Visitors can admire detailed displays of tin-smithing, clog-making, pottery, glass bead making (notably the famed “evil eye” beads), woodblock printing, carpet weaving, rope making, felt production, and leatherworking.
Highlights of the First Floor:
- A traditional 19th-century guest room adorned with intricate embroidery and bathing sets.
- Artisans at work: a glass bead furnace, felt-making tools, a replica of İzmir’s first Turkish pharmacy (Ittihat Pharmacy), and exhibits on tin and clog-making.
- A vibrant display on İzmir’s famous sherbet seller (notably offering “demirhindi” or tamarind sherbet), bringing the city’s flavors to life.
Highlights of the Second Floor:
- Menemen pottery wheel and creations.
- Leather crafts, camel wrestling traditions, and folklore costumes of local “efe” warriors.
- Corridors lined with inlaid mother-of-pearl objects, handcrafted glass items, embroidered fabrics, and historical money pouches.
