Dominating the Bodrum skyline, the Castle of St. Peter is a powerful reminder of the region’s rich and tumultuous past. Built by the Knights Hospitaller of Rhodes in the early 15th century, the fortress rose following the temporary collapse of Ottoman power after Tamerlane’s invasion in 1402. Its sturdy walls and towers defended Bodrum for centuries, witnessing battles, sieges, and the ever-shifting tides of empire.
After World War I, the castle transitioned from military use to an archaeological treasure trove, eventually becoming the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, today considered one of the most important institutions of its kind worldwide. Visitors wander through atmospheric halls filled with ancient amphorae, shipwreck artifacts, and exquisite displays brought vividly to life with reconstructions, dioramas, and multimedia installations.
A climb through the battlements rewards with breathtaking panoramas over Bodrum’s twin harbors. As you follow the suggested walking routes (red for a longer route, green for a shorter visit), you’ll encounter highlights like the Glass Shipwreck Exhibit, the Chapel’s reconstructed Roman ship, and the haunting Dungeon of the Knights.
Among the castle’s treasures are extraordinary finds from the Bronze Age, including jewelry, weapons, and the famed Uluburun Shipwreck—the oldest known submerged ship in the world. Within the French Tower lies the enigmatic tomb of a noblewoman adorned with gold, often linked to Princess Ada of Caria, though her true identity remains a mystery.
Every stone and artifact inside the Castle of St. Peter whispers stories from the depths of the sea and the echoes of medieval power. Whether you’re tracing the footsteps of Crusaders or admiring the ingenuity of ancient mariners, this unforgettable monument is an essential stop on any journey through Bodrum.
