Where the Desert Meets the River – Experience Nature, Taste Tradition
Beyazsu River (Beyazsu Deresi) – An Oasis in the Heart of Mardin’s Arid Landscape
Nestled between the historical districts of Midyat and Nusaybin in the southeastern province of Mardin, Beyazsu River is a hidden gem that carves its way through a rocky plateau, offering a cool and verdant refuge in one of the driest parts of Türkiye. Located approximately 15–20 km south of Midyat and 20–25 km north of Nusaybin, this unique natural site sits along the main connecting road between the two districts and has become a beloved destination for both locals and travelers seeking tranquility, good food, and natural beauty.
A Refreshing Escape in Mardin’s Semi-Desert Terrain
In stark contrast to Mardin’s predominantly arid and treeless environment, Beyazsu River emerges from the foothills south of Midyat and flows gently through a picturesque valley toward Nusaybin. Known for its crystal-clear waters and natural springs, Beyazsu supplies fresh drinking water to Mardin and its surrounding towns year-round. More than just a water source, Beyazsu functions as a vital green oasis where locals and visitors come to enjoy the region’s cooler microclimate during hot summer months.
Along the river, you’ll find traditional fish restaurants with rustic seating arrangements crafted in regional style—wooden platforms (tahts) hovering over the river and shaded oriental-style corners (şark köşesi) that invite guests to recline and relax. These restaurants serve freshly caught fish from the river itself, allowing you to enjoy authentic and local flavors while surrounded by the peaceful sounds of flowing water and chirping birds.
What to Expect When You Visit
Beyazsu is especially popular in spring and summer when the temperature in Mardin can soar. Families, couples, and solo adventurers gather at this riverside retreat for picnics, meals, and nature walks. The area is filled with lush greenery not commonly seen in this part of Türkiye, including native trees that thrive in the river’s cool environment.
Despite its rising popularity, Beyazsu maintains a local, untouched charm. It is not overly commercialized, which makes the experience feel genuine and serene. Don’t expect a bustling resort atmosphere; instead, anticipate a peaceful connection with nature and a glimpse into the lifestyle of southeastern Türkiye.
How to Get to Beyazsu River
There are two main routes to reach Beyazsu from the city center of Mardin:
Route 1: Mardin – Nusaybin – Midyat (via Deyrulzafaran & Dara)
Start from Mardin’s old city and drive southeast along the Nusaybin road. After 4 km, visit the historic Deyrulzafaran Monastery, a major Syriac Orthodox site. Continue along this route to the Ancient City of Dara, often called the “Ephesus of Mardin.” After exploring Dara, follow the historic Silk Road toward Nusaybin. In Nusaybin, visit the Zeynel Abidin Mosque and Tomb, and the adjacent Mor Yakup Monastery. From Nusaybin, head north on the Midyat road. After approximately 25–30 km, you will arrive at Beyazsu.
Route 2: Mardin – Midyat – Beyazsu
Alternatively, drive northeast from Mardin to Midyat. Visit local attractions like the Estel Museum, State Guesthouse, Gelüşke Han, and the famous Silver Bazaar (Gümüşçüler Çarşısı). From Midyat, take the Nusaybin road south. After 15–20 km, you will reach the scenic banks of Beyazsu.
Both routes offer cultural richness and historical depth, making the journey to Beyazsu just as rewarding as the destination itself.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to experience Beyazsu is from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these months, the river provides a refreshing contrast to the dry heat of Mardin. Weekends can get busy with local families, so weekdays are perfect for those seeking solitude.
