Hidden within the volcanic plains of Central Anatolia, Aşıklı Höyük is not merely an archaeological site—it is one of the most important milestones in human history. Dated to around 8200–7400 BC, Aşıklı Höyük represents one of the earliest known permanent settlements in the world and stands as a cornerstone of Neolithic life in Anatolia.
Located near the Melendiz River in Aksaray Province, this prehistoric mound reveals the moment when humanity began to transition from nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyles to settled village life. Excavations have uncovered rectangular mud-brick houses, shared courtyards, early food storage systems, and evidence of the first attempts at animal domestication, particularly sheep and goats.
What makes Aşıklı Höyük truly extraordinary is its human story. Archaeologists have found some of the earliest known examples of brain surgery (trepanation), carefully healed skeletons, and burial practices conducted beneath house floors—suggesting strong family bonds and spiritual beliefs. There is no sign of sharp social hierarchy; instead, the settlement reflects a communal society, where life revolved around cooperation, ritual, and survival.
Walking through the site today, visitors can imagine smoke rising from hearths, obsidian tools being shaped by skilled hands, and the quiet rhythm of daily life along the river thousands of years before writing or cities existed. A modern Visitor and Interpretation Center helps bring this ancient world to life through reconstructions, panels, and guided explanations.
Aşıklı Höyük is not just a place to see—it is a place to understand how civilization began in Anatolia, making it a must-visit destination for history lovers, archaeology enthusiasts, and culturally curious travelers exploring Türkiye.
