New Mosque (Yeni Camii) – The Iconic Mosque of Eminonu

History of the New Mosque

Construction of the New Mosque began in 1597 during the reign of Sultan Mehmed III (1595–1603).

The project was commissioned by Safiye Sultan, the powerful mother of the sultan. However, after the death of Mehmed III in 1603, construction of the mosque stopped and the unfinished structure remained abandoned for many years.

Later, during the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV, the project was revived by Hatice Turhan Sultan, the mother of the young sultan.

Between 1660 and 1663, the mosque was finally completed under the supervision of Architect Mustafa Ağa.

At the same time, the famous Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) was built next to the mosque as part of the mosque complex, or külliye.

Architecture of the New Mosque

The New Mosque reflects the classical Ottoman mosque design that evolved during the 16th and 17th centuries.

The central dome measures 17.5 meters in diameter and is supported by four semi-domes, creating a balanced and symmetrical interior space.

This architectural plan shows similarities with both the Sehzade Mosque and the Blue Mosque, two important masterpieces of Ottoman architecture.

Interior Decoration

The interior of the mosque is richly decorated with Iznik tiles and painted ornamental designs (kalem işi).

These decorative elements feature mainly blue and green tones, similar to the decorative style seen in the Blue Mosque.

The walls, domes, and arches are covered with elegant patterns that represent some of the finest artistic works of the 17th century Ottoman period.

The Mosque Complex

The New Mosque was built as part of a larger külliye, or social complex.

This complex originally included:

• the Spice Bazaar

• fountains and public facilities

• charitable institutions

The revenues generated by the nearby bazaar helped support the maintenance of the mosque and its services.
