Istanbul, with its rich tapestry of history and culture, is home to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks. Among these, the Fatih Mosque stands tall, both as a place of worship and as a symbol of the city’s enduring legacy. Nestled in the district of Fatih, this grand mosque is a true masterpiece of Ottoman architecture. It was built with its complex structures (külliye) to the area where ruins of the Holy Apostles Church remained in years between 1463 and 1470, in Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror period.

Fatih mosque was made for Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror himself, the visionary leader who captured Constantinople in 1453, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire and the birth of the Ottoman Empire. The mosque was named “Fatih” in his honor, which means “Conqueror” in Turkish.

The Fatih Mosque is a stunning example of classical Ottoman architecture. Its grand dome and elegant minarets rise proudly above the city’s skyline, casting a commanding presence. The interior is adorned with breathtaking calligraphy, intricate tile-work, and magnificent stained glass windows. It is a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the Ottoman era.

The mosque was destroyed which cannot be repaired again in an earthquake in 1766. Second Fatih Mosque rebuilt in years between 1767 and 1771 in Mustafa III (1757-1774) period. The architect of the new mosque is Mehmet Tahir Aga who is also the architect of Laleli Mosque. The tile panels decorating two window façade in interior courtyard are actual decorations of the first mosque. Mausoleum of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror is located in the direction niche.
