Ulubey Canyon Nature Park: A Hidden Gem in Uşak, Türkiye

Ulubey Canyon Nature Park, located in Uşak Province in the inner Aegean Region of Türkiye, is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the country. Often overshadowed by more famous destinations, Ulubey Canyon has begun to receive the attention it deserves for being the second longest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the United States. With a length of approximately 77 kilometers and a depth reaching up to 170 meters in certain parts, this natural marvel offers an unforgettable blend of geological grandeur, serenity, and outdoor adventure.

A Natural Wonder with Deep Roots

The Ulubey Canyon is carved by the Banaz Stream and its tributaries, dating back millions of years. The area’s unique geological formation is the result of deep erosions through limestone terrain over time, creating stunning vertical walls and layered rock strata. Fossils and natural mineral deposits embedded in the canyon walls tell a silent story of ancient marine life and prehistoric epochs. In fact, the region holds significant value for geologists and paleontologists.

In 2013, the area was officially designated as Ulubey Canyon Nature Park by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, recognizing its ecological importance and tourism potential. Since then, it has rapidly developed into a must-see destination for both domestic and international nature lovers.

Adventure, Tranquility, and the Iconic Glass Terrace

Visitors can explore the canyon in several ways. Hiking trails along the ridges provide panoramic views and ideal opportunities for photography. More adventurous travelers can descend into the canyon to walk along the riverbed, where the sound of flowing water and rustling leaves creates a peaceful escape from the urban world. The canyon is also popular for paragliding, hiking, trekking, rock climbing, camping and off-road excursions, especially during spring and autumn.

One of the park’s main attractions is the glass terrace, which extends over the edge of the canyon. Suspended 150 meters above the floor of the canyon, the terrace offers a heart-racing experience and unmatched vistas of the surrounding landscape. Visitors walking on the transparent floor can feel the immensity of the canyon beneath their feet—an adrenaline-fueled thrill paired with breathtaking beauty.

Local Delights and Sustainability

Right next to the glass terrace, a viewing platform and a cozy café offer refreshments and local delicacies, making it a perfect stop for a break. Try the region’s traditional snacks or sip on hot Turkish tea as you gaze across the canyon. Local artisans sometimes sell handcrafted souvenirs, contributing to the local economy.

The development of Ulubey Canyon Nature Park follows sustainable tourism principles. Local authorities and environmentalists have worked to ensure that foot traffic and tourism infrastructure do not negatively impact the natural ecosystem. Educational boards and signs help raise awareness about the geology, flora, and fauna of the canyon.

How to Get There

Ulubey Canyon is located just 30 kilometers southwest of Uşak city center. It’s easily accessible by car, with a well-paved road leading directly to the park entrance. If you’re traveling from İzmir, the drive takes around 3 hours, while from Ankara it’s approximately 5 hours. Uşak Airport offers limited domestic flights, and travelers can also opt to arrive by intercity bus or train to Uşak and then take a taxi or rental car to reach the canyon.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to early November) are the ideal seasons to visit Ulubey Canyon. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the skies are clear, and the natural surroundings are either in full bloom or painted in fall colors. Summer can be hot, particularly in midday, while winter may limit access due to occasional snowfall and muddy trails.
