Welcome to the Perinthos Ancient City, a historical marvel founded in the 6th century BCE by communities originating from the island of Samos. Designated as a first and third-degree archaeological site, Perinthos holds a significant place in the annals of history.

Described by ancient writers like Diodorus in the 4th century BCE, Perinthos is vividly depicted during the siege by Philip II, where the houses on the slopes of the acropolis resembled spectators in a theater from a distance.

The most well-preserved remnants from antiquity, the city walls, encircle Perinthos, comprising both the acropolis and the lower city. Particularly noteworthy are the walls on the northwest corner of the acropolis, reaching heights of 6 to 7 meters, a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its builders.

However, the lower city walls in the district now known as Kalekapı in Ereğli have been entirely destroyed due to construction activities. The sea walls facing the harbor on the northern tip of the peninsula are partially preserved, reaching heights of up to 5 meters. These walls, visible in Ereğli today, date back to the 5th century CE.

The steep southern slopes of the acropolis did not necessitate the construction of walls, but support walls were erected on the southwest to prevent soil erosion due to the weight of the buildings.

Perinthos stands as a testament to the endurance of human civilization, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and marvel at its architectural splendor. Join us on a journey through time as we unravel the mysteries of this ancient city.
