Meke Lake: A Unique Volcanic Crater in Central Anatolia
Meke Lake, located near Karapınar in Konya Province, is one of Türkiye’s most extraordinary geological formations. Often described as a “lake within a lake,” Meke is a volcanic crater lake formed by ancient eruptions thousands of years ago. Its striking appearance, featuring a central volcanic cone rising from the middle of the water basin, creates a rare and visually dramatic landscape.
The lake was formed approximately five million years ago through volcanic activity associated with the Karapınar volcanic field. Over time, rainwater and underground springs filled the crater, creating the lake ecosystem seen today. Later volcanic eruptions produced a secondary cone within the original crater, giving Meke its distinctive double-crater structure.
Because of its geological significance, Meke Lake has been designated a natural protected area and recognized internationally for its unique volcanic morphology.
Geological Formation and Environmental Importance
Meke Lake represents one of the clearest examples of a maar-type volcanic crater in Anatolia. The surrounding region is known for volcanic cones, lava fields, and karstic depressions formed by tectonic and volcanic processes.
The lake ecosystem also provides habitat for migratory birds and endemic plant species adapted to the semi-arid climate of Central Anatolia. However, in recent decades, reduced groundwater levels and climate changes have caused seasonal shrinkage of the lake’s water body, highlighting environmental challenges in the region.
Things to Do at Meke Lake
Visitors can enjoy several nature-oriented activities, including:
Observing the unique volcanic landscape
Photography of the crater and central cone
Birdwatching during migration seasons
Exploring surrounding volcanic formations
Scenic walks across the steppe terrain
The area is especially popular among nature photographers and geology enthusiasts.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Meke Lake is during spring and early autumn, when weather conditions are mild and the landscape displays seasonal color variations.
Spring months offer clearer visibility of water reflections, while autumn provides dramatic steppe scenery.
How to Get There
Meke Lake is located approximately 100 km from Konya city center and about 8 km from Karapınar district.
Visitors can reach the lake via:
Private vehicle from Konya along the Konya–Adana highway
Intercity buses to Karapınar followed by a short drive
Due to limited public transport, visiting by car is recommended.
Nearby Attractions
Travelers visiting Meke Lake can also explore nearby natural and geological sites such as:
Karapınar Sand Dunes – A unique desert-like landscape
Obruk Lakes – Karstic sinkhole lakes in the region
Acıgöl Crater Lake – Another volcanic formation nearby
These sites together form one of Türkiye’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes.
