Mazı Underground City – Hidden Depths Beneath Cappadocia
Tucked away in the quiet countryside of Cappadocia, Mazı Underground City (Mazı Yeraltı Şehri) is one of the region’s lesser-known but most intriguing underground settlements. Located in the Mazı village within the Ürgüp district of Nevşehir Province, this ancient city carved deep into the soft volcanic rock offers a hauntingly beautiful and immersive experience into the ingenuity of early civilizations that once thrived in Central Anatolia.
A Forgotten Labyrinth of Ancient Life
Mazı Underground City dates back to the early Iron Age and was later expanded by the Phrygians and Byzantines. Its strategic location and hidden access points made it a vital refuge from invading forces, particularly during the Arab-Byzantine wars and later during the early Islamic conquests. Though it may not match the sheer size of Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, Mazı impresses with its well-preserved structure, intimate atmosphere, and authentic feel.
The city consists of multiple floors—some still inaccessible—spanning a depth of around 40 meters. Unlike other more commercialized underground cities, Mazı retains a raw, untouched ambiance. Visitors can explore stables with feeding troughs, a large winery complete with fermentation chambers, communal living quarters, storage areas, and an intricately designed ventilation system that speaks to the advanced architectural understanding of its creators.
What truly sets Mazı apart is its entrance, which was cleverly disguised behind a boulder, making it nearly invisible to potential invaders. Inside, narrow tunnels link rooms and floors, creating a complex network of passages designed for defense and survival. The city is believed to have sheltered hundreds of people at a time, along with their animals and supplies.
An Intimate Underground Experience
Unlike the heavily touristed sites in Cappadocia, Mazı Underground City provides a quieter, more meditative exploration. Its small corridors, sometimes only wide enough for one person at a time, give visitors a sense of life in hiding—of a community that lived silently and strategically beneath the earth’s surface. Guides are available on site, often local villagers deeply familiar with the site’s history and eager to share stories passed down through generations.
The soft yellow lighting, the natural rock colors, and the lack of crowds allow for a more personal and emotionally resonant visit. Whether you’re an archaeology enthusiast or a curious traveler, Mazı offers a rare opportunity to step into an authentic underground refuge largely untouched by mass tourism.
Getting There and Nearby Attractions
Mazı is located approximately 18 km from Ürgüp and around 30 km from Nevşehir city center. It can be reached by car via the Nevşehir–Kayseri Road, turning toward the village of Mazı. Local tours sometimes include Mazı as part of a customized itinerary, especially for those seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Nearby, you can also explore the towns of Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa, or venture to Kaymaklı Underground City if you’re comparing different structures. Mazı’s relatively remote location means it’s best visited as part of a half-day trip, ideally with a knowledgeable guide or as part of a small group.
Best Time to Visit
Mazı Underground City is open year-round, but the best times to visit are during the spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) when the weather is mild. Summer months can be hot on the surface, but underground temperatures remain cool. In winter, icy conditions can make village roads slippery, though the city itself is open.
