  • Konya

Located on the rocky highlands southwest of Konya, Kilistra (Lystra) Ancient City is one of Anatolia’s most significant yet lesser-known centers of early Christianity. Known as Lystra in ancient sources, the city flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods and played a key role in the spread of Christianity across Central Anatolia.

Kilistra is closely associated with Saint Paul (St. Paul) and Barnabas, who visited the city during their missionary journeys. According to the New Testament, after Paul healed a crippled man here, local people believed he was a god and attempted to worship him. Shortly afterward, Paul was stoned and expelled from the city—an event that firmly anchors Lystra in Christian sacred history.

Unlike monumental Roman cities, Kilistra developed through rock-cut architecture, similar to Cappadocia. The site contains rock-carved churches, chapels, monasteries, cisterns, tombs, and dwellings, reflecting a religious community that adapted its faith to the landscape. These structures indicate that Kilistra served as a refuge and spiritual center during periods of persecution, especially in the Byzantine era.

Walking through Kilistra today feels intimate and contemplative. The silence of the carved chambers, hidden sanctuaries, and narrow rock corridors allows visitors to imagine the prayers whispered here centuries ago. Rather than grandeur, Kilistra offers a powerful sense of belief, resilience, and continuity, making it a deeply meaningful destination for cultural travelers.
