The Grand Ottoman Mansion with 64 Meters of Bosphorus Grace

Stretching along the Asian shoreline of the Bosphorus in Kandilli, Kıbrıslı Yalısı is one of the most majestic and best-preserved Ottoman waterfront mansions in Istanbul. Known for its impressive 64-meter-long façade and balanced proportions, it stands as a timeless testament to the refinement of 18th and 19th-century Ottoman domestic architecture.

The mansion was originally commissioned in the late 18th century for Grand Vizier Mehmet İzzet Paşa during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid I. It later became the residence of Kıbrıslı Mehmet Emin Paşa, another distinguished Ottoman statesman who served as Grand Vizier and governor of Egypt. The mansion takes its name from him, symbolizing an era of political prestige and architectural sophistication.

Built on a vast waterfront estate, Kıbrıslı Yalısı features the classic tripartite Ottoman layout:

  • Selamlık (men’s quarters),

  • Harem (family section), and

  • Mabeyn (central ceremonial hall).

Each section was designed to balance privacy, hospitality, and harmony with the surrounding landscape. The interiors were once adorned with delicate wooden carvings, mirrored ceilings, and painted panels that reflected the Bosphorus light — a hallmark of Ottoman yalı aesthetics.

The mansion’s location beside the former Küçüksu Beach made it a preferred stop for visiting dignitaries and travelers. Over the centuries, Empress Eugénie of France, Iraqi King Faisal II, and poet Yahya Kemal Beyatlı were among its notable guests. The yalı also witnessed one of Ottoman society’s most talked-about love stories — that of Kıbrıslı Mehmet Emin Paşa and Melek Hanım, a cultured and independent woman of the era whose life later inspired literary works.

Although the mansion is privately owned today, its exterior remains a defining feature of the Bosphorus panorama. With its pale tones, elegant symmetry, and deep waterfront terrace, Kıbrıslı Yalısı exemplifies the blend of architectural beauty and emotional depth that defines Istanbul’s yalı culture.

Nearby, other remarkable mansions such as Sadullah Paşa Yalısı, Sait Halim Paşa Yalısı, and Abud Efendi Yalısı continue the story of Ottoman aristocratic life along the strait — forming a living open-air museum of history and architecture.
