Beldibi Cave is one of the most significant prehistoric rock shelters in Türkiye, located in the Beldibi neighborhood of Kemer, Antalya, just a few meters from the Mediterranean Sea. Set between steep mountains and the coastline, this archaeological site offers a rare combination of natural beauty and early human history.
The cave was first scientifically studied in 1956 by French archaeologist Louis Dupre. Excavations and surveys revealed Paleolithic and Mesolithic rock paintings, created using red ochre pigment. These paintings depict human figures, animals, hunting scenes, and symbolic shapes, making Beldibi Cave one of the earliest known artistic expressions in Anatolia.
Rather than being a deep cave system, Beldibi is a wide rock shelter facing the sea. This strategic position allowed prehistoric communities to use the site as a temporary dwelling, observation point, and ritual space. The proximity to fresh water sources, forests, and marine life made it an ideal settlement for early hunter-gatherer groups.
Today, Beldibi Cave stands as a silent witness to thousands of years of human presence along the Mediterranean coast. Although modern development surrounds the area, the cave itself preserves a powerful sense of antiquity. Visitors can observe the rock art panels, enjoy panoramic sea views, and reflect on the lives of Anatolia’s earliest inhabitants.
Beldibi Cave is a meaningful stop for travelers interested in archaeology, prehistoric cultures, and cultural heritage, offering a short but deeply informative visit that connects nature and history.
