Balıklıgöl: Sacred Waters of Prophets in Şanlıurfa, Türkiye

Nestled in the heart of Şanlıurfa, the historic and spiritual center of southeastern Türkiye, Balıklıgöl—also known as the Pool of Sacred Fish—is one of the country’s most iconic religious and cultural landmarks. Revered by Muslims and visited by people of all faiths, Balıklıgöl blends myth, faith, and natural beauty in an unforgettable setting that connects modern visitors to the ancient legends of the prophets.

A Site of Deep Religious Significance

Balıklıgöl is famously associated with the story of the Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim), who, according to Islamic tradition, defied the tyrant King Nimrod and was cast into a fire for rejecting idolatry. By divine intervention, the flames turned into water, and the burning logs became fish. The pool that exists today is believed to be the very spot where this miracle occurred. As a result, the fish in the pool—carp known locally as “sacred fish”—are considered holy and are never harmed.

This sacred site is composed of two main pools: Balıklıgöl (Pool of Abraham) and Aynzeliha Lake, named after Nimrod’s daughter, Zeliha, who is believed to have leapt into the fire in solidarity with Abraham and was also saved. The site is surrounded by historic mosques, including the Halil-ur-Rahman Mosque (1211) and the Rızvaniye Mosque (1716), whose graceful minarets and courtyards complement the serene atmosphere of the pools.

Architectural and Spiritual Harmony

Visitors to Balıklıgöl are greeted by a tranquil oasis amidst the desert climate of southeastern Anatolia. The Ottoman-era architecture, lush gardens, and soothing sound of flowing water offer a peaceful setting for contemplation. Pilgrims and tourists alike feed the sacred carp from the edge of the pool or rent small boats on Aynzeliha Lake to view the entire area from the water.

The complex also houses the Cave of Abraham, believed to be the birthplace of the prophet. Many visitors make time for a quiet moment inside the cave, reflecting or offering prayers. Surrounding bazaars and souvenir shops sell religious trinkets, handcrafted jewelry, and local Şanlıurfa specialties such as isot pepper and pistachio products.

A Cultural Gem Beyond Religion

While Balıklıgöl is primarily known for its religious and spiritual importance, it also represents the cultural and historical depth of Şanlıurfa, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. With its blend of Assyrian, Hellenistic, Islamic, and Ottoman influences, the site appeals to historians, photographers, and seekers of authentic cultural experiences.

During your visit, you can witness locals practicing traditional music, offering Turkish tea, or participating in religious ceremonies. Evening hours often reveal a stunning scene, as the golden glow of sunset reflects on the water, casting the mosques and sacred fish in magical hues.

How to Get There

Balıklıgöl is located in the center of Şanlıurfa city, making it easily accessible by foot, local minibuses (dolmuş), or taxis from anywhere in the city. The nearest airport is Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (GNY), approximately 35 kilometers away. Regular domestic flights from major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and İzmir make travel convenient. From the airport, taxis or shuttle buses are available to the city center.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Balıklıgöl is during spring (April–June) or autumn (September–November), when the weather is warm but not scorching. Summers in Şanlıurfa can be extremely hot, while winters are mild and less crowded. Religious holidays like Eid bring large crowds, but also offer a vibrant, communal atmosphere.
