Rising dramatically from the volcanic rock formations of Central Anatolia, the Midas Monument (Yazılıkaya) is one of the most iconic and mysterious remnants of the Phrygian civilization. Located near Yazılıkaya Village in Eskişehir Province, this monumental rock façade dates back to the 8th century BC and stands as a powerful symbol of Phrygian religious belief, artistry, and political identity.
Often referred to as the Midas Monument, the structure is not a tomb, as once believed, but a cult façade dedicated to the Phrygian mother goddess Cybele (Matar). The name “Midas” appears in an ancient Phrygian inscription on the monument, linking it to King Midas, the legendary ruler known from Greek mythology for his golden touch. While myth and history intertwine here, archaeology confirms Yazılıkaya as a sacred ceremonial center rather than a burial site.
The monument features a towering geometric façade carved directly into the rock, crowned with a triangular pediment and filled with intricate linear patterns. At its center lies a shallow niche where religious rituals were likely performed. Surrounding the monument are rock-cut altars, stairways, chambers, inscriptions, and additional façades, all forming part of a vast open-air sanctuary within what is today known as the Phrygian Valley.
Standing before the Midas Monument is a humbling experience. The silence of the plateau, broken only by wind, enhances the monument’s timeless presence. It is easy to imagine ancient ceremonies unfolding here—priests, offerings, and chants echoing across the rocks. Yazılıkaya is not only an archaeological site; it is a place where mythology, religion, and landscape merge, offering visitors a profound connection to Anatolia’s deep past.
