The Green Gateway of the Bosphorus
Nestled on the Asian side of Istanbul, Beykoz is one of the city’s most serene and nature-rich districts, where dense forests, historic waterfront villages, and elegant Bosphorus mansions coexist in quiet harmony. Unlike the fast-paced rhythm of central Istanbul, Beykoz offers a slower, greener, and more contemplative experience—one that feels closer to a countryside retreat than a metropolitan district.
Historically, Beykoz has been known since antiquity as a favored settlement due to its strategic position along the Bosphorus. During the Ottoman era, it flourished as a leisure and hunting ground for sultans and high-ranking officials. Imperial groves, waterfront palaces, and pavilions once defined the area, traces of which can still be felt today in places like Beykoz Grove and the surrounding historic neighborhoods.
Today, Beykoz is admired for its lush forests, coastal promenades, and village-like districts such as Anadolu Kavağı, Kanlıca’s northern edges, and the Bosphorus-facing neighborhoods dotted with historic wooden mansions. It is one of the rare places in Istanbul where you can walk from a forest trail directly to the sea.
Yet Beykoz is not only about landscapes. There is a distinct atmosphere here—a feeling of calm mornings, fishermen preparing their boats at dawn, tea gardens overlooking the water, and winding roads disappearing into greenery. It is a district best explored slowly, allowing the Bosphorus breeze and forest air to guide your pace.
How to Get There
Beykoz is accessible only from the Asian side of Istanbul.
By Ferry: Regular ferry services operate from Üsküdar and Kadıköy to Beykoz and nearby piers along the Bosphorus.
By Bus: Numerous IETT bus lines connect Beykoz with Üsküdar, Kadıköy, and Ümraniye.
By Car: Driving offers flexibility, especially for exploring forested areas, but traffic can be heavy during weekends.
